Vasconcellea pubescens (Mountain Paw Paw)
Sub-tropical fruit which handles cold better than other varieties. Grows well in frost-free parts of the North Island. Majestic tree with a truly straight stem growing large, distinguished, evergreen leaves up to 60 cm across and deeply lobed.
Bright yellow fruit about the size of a small apple, but with strongly lobed longitudinal segments. Harvests early summer through late autumn as fruit gradually ripens. Fruit is formed on new growth.
Requires a sheltered position, benefiting from dappled sun or a part shade position such as under larger trees. Frost tender and won’t handle wind. Tolerant of mild drought once established. Will adapt to different soil types as long as they drain well.
