Bougainvillea Scarlet O’Hara

$14.99

Bougainvillea glabra ‘Scarlet O’Hara’ (Paper Flower)

Vigorous, sub-tropical, climbing shrub with sturdy, thorned branches that work fantastically supported by a fence or climbing frame. If no structure is provided, it will develop a sprawling, groundcover form. Summer brings an thick coat of glowing scarlet-red, papery flowers over the light green, heart-shaped foliage, which attracts butterflies and other beneficial insects. Grows approximately 4 x 4m. Can be pruned to size.

In warm climates, Bougainvillea are evergreen plants and can flower throughout the year. Cooler climates will cause the plant to go dormant and defoliate over winter with a semi-deciduous habit.

Good for growing in a large pot, to control size. Thrives in a hot, sunny, sheltered location. Suitable for all well draining soils, preferring drier soils. Tolerates light frost to -5° and coastal conditions. Apply a dressing of slow release fertiliser in spring and summer. Prune as necessary to shape.
