The native name Kowhai means yellow and represents the pendulous racemes of nectar-filled, golden flowers that appear in spring, beloved by Tui. Slender tree with an open form. S. tetraptera flowers at a younger age than others. Semi-evergreen; is known to defoliate in particularly adverse, frosty winters. Grows approx 6m high x 4m wide in 10 years.
Suits a part shade position in soils that don’t get too dry. Suits wetter soil conditions, growing wonderfully along riverbanks. Wind and semi-frost hardy.
