Kai Iwi School

School Vege Challenge 2023

Harvest Time & Judging

Getting Going

A generous donation from our sponsors Zealandia, Tui, Ican, Eastown Timber, Yates and Egmont has been dropped off to get everyone kicked off. Adding to the foundation Kai Iwi School had established from the challenge last year, we at Springvale Garden Centre are eager to see how their garden continues to develop.

The Bok Choy was harvested on Monday (March 27th) and the photo is with the team that planted it, who also harvested it!

Kai Iwi School remains hard at work, building new garden beds additional to the resources provided with the challenge starter kits.

Mid Challenge Update

We didn’t manage to visit Kai Iwi under the COVID restrictions and staff and student sickness at this time. Parent help for the gardening team had been limited at the start of the year. Kai Iwi has persevered and are getting going now. They sent us through the below photos.

Getting Going

We currently have a small orchard that the enviro team help look after and a small vege garden, but it will be amazing for tamariki to learn to grow good food and follow it from the growing to the plate! We are a small rural school and really appreciate the chance to participate in this challenge.

Our school vision is to grow the biggest and healthiest fruit and vegetables by working together as an enviro team, with help from Dyane our parent volunteer. We have taken on responsibilities like watering, weeding and baiting to ensure we get the best results. We are hoping that with our efforts we learn something new, try new foods, and hopefully win. All by having fun outside.
