Wasabi japonica (Japanese Horseradish)

Evergreen, rhizomatous perennial with large, textured, green, heart-shaped leaves. Grows approximately 40 x 40cm. The rhizome and base of the stem is harvested and ground down to make wasabi paste. The foliage can be harvested and used fresh in salads, with a peppery bite similar to that of watercress.

Suits a shaded position with part sun. Requires sharply draining soil with plenty of moisture. Semi-aquatic. Frost tender.
