Tamarillo Muligan
$19.99
Solanum betacea ‘Muligan’ (Tamarillo, Tree Tomato)
Large, subtropical, heart-shaped leaves form a dramatic focal point in your garden with copious amounts of fruit in autumn. Foliage is soft and lightly haired with a pleasant aroma. The fast growing tree will reach about 3m. Clusters of fragrant, pale pink flowers in summer. Followed by heavy crops of medium-sized, dark red, egg-shaped fruit with a bold, acidic flavour. Self fertile. Harvest – May to June.
Fruit grows on new spring growth, so regular pruning is essential to maintaining size and optimising harvest. Prune in spring after frosts have passed.
Choose a sheltered, full sun position with protection from frost and heavy winds. Plant in spring/summer in fertile, well drained soil and plenty of organic matter. Requires adequate moisture, is not tolerant of drought. Tamarillos are quite susceptible to aphids and whitefly.
