Macropiper excelsum – Kawakawa, NZ Pepper Tree

Small, attractive, aromatic tree which is great for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Dense grower with bright green, heart shaped leaves on dark stems. Produces tiny flower spikes in spring which, on female plants, develop into bright orange berries highly loved by native birds. Especially attractive to kereru. Grows approximately 4m high x 3m wide in 10 years.

Performs best in a shaded position with dappled light and is tolerant to more heavy shade. Prefers a rich, free draining soil which is kept moist. Tolerates wind and coastal conditions once established but requires protection from frost.
