Elegia tectorum (Cape Thatching Restio)

A tall, erect, dark green reed that makes an excellent feature plant. Native to South Africa, occurring naturally in marshes and coastal sites. Looks fabulous in open, windy sites and near water. Dense, clumping form of bright green stems with burgundy sheaths that curl outwards. Dark brown, spiky inflorescences at the tips of the stems in summer later producing attractive, brown, nut-like fruits. Grows approximately 1.5m high with a spread of 1-1.5m.

Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil that doesn’t get too dry. Hardy. Tolerant of wind and frosts. Suitable for coastal planting.
