Round-headed tree with large, heart-shaped leaves of glowing-purple. Leaves turn glowing-orange and red in autumn. Masses of rose-pink, pea-shaped flowers on the bare branches in spring. Branch patterning in winter is a feature. Grows to 4m high x 3m wide in 10 years.
Thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, in sun or partial shade. Tolerant of most soil types. Benefits from annual mulching with compost and a feed of slow release fertiliser.
