Camellia C.M. Hovey
An old, popular, free flowering variety with formal, double, vivid crimson-scarlet flowers. Showy flowers are bourne mid-late season, in early winter through mid spring. Large evergreen shrub with strong, bushy growth of attractive, glossy, thick, dark green foliage. Suitable for general gardens, containers, espalier or bonsai. Ideal for screening and can be closely clipped. Can reach up to a height of 4m in 15 years, with spread of 2m.
Plant in cool, moist, lime-free soil. Camellias are quite hardy, happy with morning sun in a part shade position. Avoid planting in frosty and windy areas. Apply acidic fertiliser, compost and/or peat moss to improve pH of soil. Mulch roots in summer to keep cool and retain moisture.
