Persea americana – Avocado ‘Bacon’

Medium-sized fruit with smooth, thin, green skin. The skin remains green, but darkens slightly when ripe. Yellow-green flesh of a light flavour, smooth and silky. Fruit size is from 280grms to 500grms. Easy to peel with a large seed at the centre.

Mid-winter variety. 12 months from flowering to harvest in cool climates. Harvest from late autumn to early spring. Early and consistent cropper. B-type flowers; cross pollinate with Avocado ‘Hass’ or ‘Reed’.

Tree forms a thick canopy with a spreading habit. Good for growing as a dense shade tree. Large, dark green, leathery leaves. Grows approximately 5m high x 4m wide in 10 years.

Grow in a full sun position with good, aerated, well drained soil. Avocado trees will not tolerate wet and compacted soils. Benefits from plenty of organic material and mulch. Fertilise regularly during spring and summer and water during dry periods. Tolerant of a light frost. Support well and protect from wind while tree is young.
