Astelia chathamica (Kakaha)

Arching, sword-shaped, silvery-green leaves of this striking, clump-forming, foliage plant have an almost metallic sheen and make a superb addition to any garden. The highly ornamental foliage of this New Zealand native creates a strong architectural effect. In forests of New Zealand, Astelias are often seen growing as an epiphyte up in the branches of trees! Fabulous in containers. Makes a great impact planted in groups en-masse. Will grow approximately 1m high x 1.5m wide.

Grow in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of a wide range of soils and climates but requires well drained soil. Keep moist in dry weather. Will benefit from an annual mulch to keep roots cool. Do not place mulch up against the base of the plant as this can cause rot in the centre. Suitable for coastal conditions, windy, exposed sites and light frost. Needs protection from strong winds and harsh frost.
