Ribes sanguineum (Red Flowering Currant)

Medium-sized, bushy, deciduous shrub. From early spring 10cm pendant racemes of deep rose-pink flowers appear from every bare, upright branch. Followed by blue-black berries covered with a whitish coat. Berries are edible and quite tart. Rounded, lobed leaves are dark green, turning vivid yellow and red in autumn. Excellent for use as informal hedges and screens. Grows approximately 2.5 x 2.5m.

Grows in full sun to part shade. Appreciates shelter from hot, harsh afternoon sun. Prefers a moderately fertile, free draining soil kept lightly moist through hot summers. Drought tolerant once established. Hardy.
