Rubus penatlobus – Orangeberry

Medium-sized, berryfruit with orange flesh. The fruit, when ripe, has a tangy flavour reminiscent of orange cordial. Orangeberry takes 2-3 years to fruit. Delicate, white flowers arrive in spring followed by the bright orange fruit in early summer.

Orangeberries are stunning with their dense mat of miniature, tough, dark-green, grape-like leaves that have a purple tinge during winter. Growing approximately 15-25cm tall with 2 square metres spread.

Orangeberries are infertile and require cross-pollination with another member of the rubus family, such as raspberries and blackberries. Hardy plant that grows in almost every condition, but prefers a full sun position with free-draining soil. Will tolerate sand and clay, but not wet soils. Frost hardy.
